Governance Board Members

The American Ethnic Studies Governance Board, representing the concerns and interests of the AMETH Faculty, is responsible for the academic development of the Program (for example, course selection, faculty selection, program priorities, and budget priorities).

The Board was first established in the Fall of 1987, following the naming of the initial faculty of the program. It replaced the AMETH Development Committee, which had governed the program until that time.

The Governance Board consists of the Director of the American Ethnic Studies Program, six members of the AMETH Faculty and one or two student representatives. The Director of the (Hale Library) Minorities Resource/Research Center may also serve as an ex-officio member. The tenure for participation on the Governance Board is three years for both elected and appointed faculty members. Terms are staggered with two new faculty members joining the Board each year (one elected and one appointed). Elections are generally held in mid-Spring and terms begin at the end of the Spring Semester.

Meetings are held monthly during the Fall and Spring semesters. Meetings are open and minutes are distributed to all AMETH faculty. Service on the AMETH Governance Board is considered a form of service to the University and is generally recognized as such by Deans and department heads.
